How to Maximise the Amount you Raise at Auction
If you are running a charity auction you are going to want to raise as much money as possible so here a few tips for you.
As with any auction, to achieve the maximum possible amount you need at least two keen bidders, so it is important to publicise the main items in the auction well in advance. You can't sell a secret!
So
- Plan early and well
- Match the items to be sold to the potential audience
- Publicise the auction well in advance.
- Newspapers and local magazines
- Email to your donors
- To other organistaions who might be interested in the memorabilia. If you have a signed rugby football jersey - contact the local rugby clubs.
- On your website
- Budget for the variety of costs associated with running an auction
- Choose your Auctioneer well - a good auctioner can make a huge difference to the results
- If the auction is part of an entertainment event such as a dinner or concert, don't try to auction too many items. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the auction, say 5 items and then get back to the event.
- If you are going to allow telephone or written bids, work out how you are going to handle them and have clear instructions so the absent bidder understands the process
- When preparing for a silent auction, supply bid sheets
- Organise and brief a team of volunteers on-site to support the event. You will need volunteers to:
- Spot bidders
- Move the auction items to the stage
- To look after the payment
- To ensure the item is delivered safely to the top bidder
- Say thanks to all people involved
Have a silent auction or raffle for any other items you have been offered.
